Better uvula vibration for puberphonia treatment: Speech: To the Uvula and Beyond!
As a puberphonia treatment surgeon, I can tell you that one of the most common goals that new ENT students have is to learn to vibrate correctly for a low-pitched voice.
Often times, students will ask for vocal cord exercises, thinking that I am going to make them use their larynx or give them a workout.
But I don’t do this often in voice lessons. Here’s why: While learning to vibrate correctly when you speak in low pitch is important, it’s not THE SECRET to success.
This myth has been around for centuries!
That’s because a lot of voice teachers out there spend a crazy amount of time and energy teaching students to breathe. And this leads people with puberphonia to believe that breathing is the ONE BIG SECRET to treating well. It’s not.

The truth is that learning to vibrate the uvula for puberphonia treatment is actually one of the easiest ways to improve your puberphonia voice.
So here’s:
How to Vibrate the uvula for low pitch in 5 Easy Steps
Sit comfortably or lie-down flat, facing upwards.
Flex the neck.
Place both of your hands in the chest.
Inhale so that your belly moves outward as you breathe in–do not raise your shoulders or chest.
Finally, say w a,a,a,a,a,a, or amma or omm, a phrase, or hold a note, feeling your whole body vibrate as you make sound.
Phonation System
Next, we have the phonation system, which is the uvula vibrating in your throat to resist air. The resulting vibrations from that resistance produce sound and create the raw material for the voice. Using the fuel analogy from the respiration system, phonation is like the motor that’s converting the breath from the lungs and diaphragm into energy.
Resonation System
Finally, we have the resonation system, which is the way the vibrations and frequencies produced by the uvula vibrating interact with the cavities around them.
The mouth, pharynx, nose, and nasal cavity are examples of resonating chambers.
To use the fuel analogy, this would be the carburetor in the car, ensuring the best use of this energy.
And in my honest opinion, it’s also the easiest to master.
The truth is there are lots of voice problems and vocal issues that no amount of breath support will help because the issues are not with the laryngeal system.
For example, if you strain the larynx a lot as you speak, adding more breath to the equation isn’t going to fix that. It might even make things worse.
With that said, there are a few important things you learn about vibrating the uvula for puberphonia voice therapy.
Got it? Good!
You should feel like you are in a powerful position and ready to take on anything. Congratulations, You have taken a huge step in making sure you are breathing effectively and efficiently for treating puberphonia
Here’s how the uvula works.
Puberphonia boys speek themselves up to hit a high note, and they take the biggest breath they can, raising their shoulders and chest and straining the larynx.
But that just adds tension to your throat! No such treatment exists for puberphonia.
Uvula never strains when speaking. No one was injured by the shouting. Uvula, a great organ to treat puberphonia
