Ululation varied pitched vocal sound resembling a howl with a trilling quality. It is produced by emitting a high pitched loud voice accompanied with a rapid back and forth movement of the tongue and the uvula. Tamil Nadu: Known as kulavai idal or kolavai, the sound is considered auspicious and is performed during weddings, festivals like Pongal, temple rituals, and housewarmings. In ancient Sangam literature, it was also described as a war cry associated with the goddess of victory, Korravai.
